    1. Tekno PatheticĀ 3 is similar in gameplay mechanics but the horror couldn’t be more different. While SH2 was cold eerie, creepy, and quiet, SH3 is loud, chaotic, and frantic.

    2. Quite disappointing never seeing Cry of Fear get any love on these lists, but they at least give Silent Hill the recognition it deserves. Silent Hill 2 is one of, if not the best game I have ever played.

  1. Alien Isolation? Outlast? The Evil Within? All just in the honorable mentions section!?!?!? Watchmojo rarely screws up, but this time they did, big time. Alien Isolation alone is far superior to most of these horror games! Give us at least a good reason as to why they aren’t in the top ten!

    1. *****Ā Then we are even more stupid to think that Alien Isolation is just an honorable mention. Where do you even vote?!?

    2. Because all of those except the Evil Within are copies of Amnesia, but Silent Hill 2 is different from all horror games.

    3. TheDuckClockĀ What do you mean by drawn out? I was on the edge constantly in the game. It was definitely worth more then an honorable mention, at least.

  2. What I see are a lot of butthurt modern fans. Let me explain. During its time, Silent Hill 2 scared the pants out of way more people than Alien or Outlast ever did now. Also the story lines are much more intricately woven and symbolically meaningful than most modern games. Plus, most modern games are just jump scares. That doesn’t amount to a better game. Survival horror isn’t just about being scared. It is about the tension that rises to resort us humans back to our primal instincts. My personal favorite is actually Resident Evil 4 as it sort of reinvented the genre, but this was a very solid list. Most people are quick to claim that the game they are playing now deserves to be on the list or not an honorable mention, but will they be remembered in 10 years? Give a solid opinion other than stating that the game was simply better.

    1. Horror games wouldn’t be what they are if it weren’t for Silent Hill, they are the undisputed kings of horror and if anybody tries to argue otherwise Ā i’ll throw the PT for Silent Hills in their face, Ā uncultured swines

  3. … You put Dead space, The Last of Us and fucking System Shock 2 down as ‘survival horror games’ yet you Honourable Mention Outlast? Seriously? OUTLAST? And The Evil Within? More of a horror than bloody The Last Of Us. Jesus… This is just the most disappointing list you’ve ever done.

  4. Silent Hill 2 has the greatest story in any video game ever, it’s also the creepiest game you’ll ever play.

    1. I agree, the games soundtrack isn’t just my favorite video game soundtrack…It’s some of my favorite music in general.

    2. I’d love to see them do a complete Silent Hill 2 overhaul. I’d probably be okay with Silent Hills just being Silent Hill 2 all over again with Norman Reedus as James Sunderland. Maybe they could at least do a little homage to the best in series.

  5. The Last of Us? Over Outlast and Alien: Isolation? As if TLoU wasn’t overrated enough, now people are saying it’s scarier than actual horror games?

    1. Outlast is way scarier than The Last of Us, but this is the decision of the people, not necessarily Watchmojo.

    2. I will rephrase this a million times if I need to: hate the game, but if you haven’t PLAYED the game, then you’re claims are false. If you have played the game and you’re telling the truth and not bullshitting me, good for you, but if you just watched a let’s play of the game it won’t count.
I’m not saying the game is fucking awesome and if it didn’t blow your socks off then you suck, because if I said that (or even implied it), I’d be the sucker.Ā
Though I do agree. I find it dumb that they have a list of horror games and on the list is a game that has 99.9% survival, but with only 1% of horror.
      Solid opinion you have there,
and before some dumbass begins typing the keyboard fast spewing out profanity in my way, this is my opinion, hate it or not, it’s on the internet, so deal with it.

    3. Rubbish Guy Who Just Comments On Crap And Watches Videos
Indeed, I do own it. And I actually couldn’t bring myself to finish it. I didn’t intend to own it, it just came with a PS3 bundle for Christmas. Admittedly I watched the story beforehand on Youtube, but not only did it leave little impact on me (expect for the end), but nothing else about the game impressed me after I finally got my hands on it. The only thing it had going for it was the story, and after you’ve gotten that out of the way on your first playthrough, well… then what? You’ve got lackluster multiplayer and meh gameplay consisting of some tired elements that we’ve seen a million times.

I just can’t see what all the fuss is about. It’s polished to be sure, and it certainly doesn’t do anything flat-out bad, but it’s just so average that it hurts.

    4. OckhamAsylumĀ okay then. Don’t blame you, I only said what I said because of people panning a game they didn’t even play.

    5. I think The Last Of Us is a great game, but not in the horror category. It is like the walking dead games, it is a drama, not a horror. But I do agree that Outlast and Amnesia should have been in the top 5 at least.

  6. All the little kiddies saying- why isn’t five nights at freddy’s on here?! When they’ve clearly never played any other horror games.

    1. Rivas1d3rĀ So if we follow your way of thinking we all can agree that my little brothers birthday cake is way better than a high class Ā golden ice cream becasue it was made by only one person?
Fnaf has a slightly creepy story about killer furries but it just doenst do enough to be classified as a horror game a good horror game should envoke fear in youĀ
All i can say about fnaf is that you cant enter a national art museum with your finger paintings

    2. Rivas1d3r all of those games have something in common, they all use jumpscares, jumpscares are not scary they are a cheap way of scaring young children

    3. Rivas1d3r well you might think that jumpscares are the scariest things ever, but I think a scary storyline and setting is much better, that’s why games like slender and fnaf aren’t very good, because they don’t have much of a story.

    4. The Boss Stage1Ā It’s alright if you don’t like FnaF, but stop judging the ones that do..Ā

  7. You know you’re living in the “internet age, hurr” when people think that sitting around waiting for THE CARE BEARS to jumpscare you is more enthralling than what Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, and Dead Space put on the table, LOL!

    1. Nirvana Paradox I personally don’t get the appeal of Five Nights At Freddy’s. I’ve read about it and watched people play it and the plot sounds kind of stupid and theĀ gameplay doesn’t look like much fun. Overrated series

    2. Rivas1d3r Yeah, I copy and pasted it numerous times since it would have been irritating and redundant to typeĀ multiple comments that would have essentially been saying the same thing in the end.

I’m sorry but no, I’m not going to play it. I saw enough of it to know that I am not interested.

    3. Zyad48 – The Warrior of EvilĀ They’re scarier than seeing some cutsey robot animals jump up in your face for the 50th time, lmao.

    1. Exactly, if you’re a little kid that wants to find REAL horror, play Outlast or Amnesia: The Dark Descent

  8. I know kids today are all about FNAF and Slender but they don’t know how it was playing silent hill 2 on ps2 late at night…. and the horror that is Pyramid Head

    1. re3 was so scary back in 99. the tension in that game of waiting for nemesis to jump out at any second was legendary. sh2 was a masterpiece as well

    2. @@tomgibson6801
I really want re3 to get remastered i want to experence that legendary horror againšŸ’š

  9. Personal opinion Last of Us should be off the list and Alien Isolation should be on it. I enjoyed Last of Us a lot…but it’s not a horror game.

    1. +Pksoze : No, it really is. It just focuses more on the drama than it does on the horror. It’s like “The Walking Dead”, more drama and less horror.

    2. +Pksoze would you agree that resident evil remake is the same ? they’re good it’s just that zombies are not scary anymore.

    3. *****Ā I didn’t play it so I can’t comment on Resident Evil. I loved Last of Us as a game actually…it’s just not a survival horror game.

    4. PksozeĀ : And as I said before, it is. It just focuses more on the story than the horror like “The Walking Dead”.

  10. I’m so freakin’ glad Silent Hill is number 1! Silent Hill is one of the best horror games ever existed along with Resident Evil!

  11. Condemned ,Fatal Frame 2 and Eternal Darkness are some of the most clever, scary and yet underated Survival Horror Games. So good to see them in the list . And well, Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece in everyway

  12. My favourite survival horror game is The Evil Within. Because of story, characters and also atmosphere. ā™„

    1. Absolutely, deferentially should had been on the list instead of only ‘honorable mention’. Too bad it didn’t get the critical and commercial success it deserved, but hopefully there will be a sequel

    2. ***** Yeah, the creator of this game is also the creator of the first four Resident Evil major title games. ‘The evil within’ is more similar to ‘Silent hill’ though, but it’s still an amazing game

    1. ***** you can’t really say definitively it’s not scary because that your oppinon and BACK THEN there wasn’t really a horror game like it. Alien isolation is more mordern and for the technology we have now it was no where near the perfect horror experience they could have put more diversity to the jump scares because after a few deaths the tension wares off

    2. Actually. . . I cant rember the name of the game, and I’ve been looking on youtube for it, but there is a game where you play as a Japanese school BOY, and you see a girl the boy likes. He decides to leave a note on her desk, but is trapped with ghosts. It might sound not that scary, but some had to stop playing the game because they were terrified. And Silent Hill never had any effects on me, only the first one’s bosses, but the other ones, I hated and wasn’t scared.

    3. +GodofWhoopAss What kind of logic is that? Just because it’s scripted means it isn’t scary? Makes no sense… And Alien: Isolation is repetitive. Its steam wears off rather quickly.

    4. Indeed. No game could top that series since I played it. Scenes like the Prison or Hotelkitchen in the 2nd are just few of the many legendary scary moments.

    5. Brandon Vidal you’re… you’re joking, right?
silent Hill 2 was about as bad as homecoming, arguably the worst in the series.
      1 and/or 3 deserved that first spot.
